On June 21st, I performed this story on the New York City stage as part of Ben Arthur’s “Answer Songs” series. It’s the first chapter of the new memoir I’d like to write, LADYPARTS, about life (and near death) after marital rupture, but despite its reception by the audience, and despite a track record of bestsellers, I keep getting told by publishers that there is no market for this kind of book. It’s too gory, they say; the word vagina is in the first paragraph; no one cares about the dating life or medical bumps or financial issues of an aging divorcée. I’m publishing this first chapter on Medium as a test. I’m seeking crowd-sourced opinions from readers, family, and friends, whether publicly in the comments below or privately. Be honest: would you want to read the rest of this book? If so, I have set up a crowd-funded Patreon in the hopes of having the financial runway with which to write the rest of it.
